The Ocean at the End of the Lane is most definitely a Neil Gaiman book. It's also like a Pratchett book - a bit less humor and a bit more beauty in its sentences.

American Gods is a polarising book, and I belong to the people enchanted by it. Gaiman does wonderfully dirty, touching things with language, and mythology, and just drew me in.

Coraline is a wonderful book. Terrifying, too. Coraline and her parents move to a new place, where there's nothing apart from the other (strange!) people living in the house. Her parents are busy all day, and she's just left to her own devices. So she wanders around and eventually finds a mirror world, where everything is duplicated, only uncanny and weird – and where she finds parents who love her and have time for her. Now if only they were human.

Fortunately, the Milk is an entirly charming children's book, and if my little siblings were still a bit smaller, I'd totally give it to them. I'd say it works for the ages three or four and upwards, pre-school ages mostly.

I would have loved this book as a child, and I still love it as a grownup (Gaiman tends to write like that). It is paced well, written wonderfully and rings true (in a very similar way American Gods does, but a bit toned-down to the way children see the world). Technically it is a coming-of-age story. I spent a long afternoon reading it and feel a lot better for the time spent.

Neverwhere must have been my first adult Urban Fantasy, and I was head over heels for it. Gaiman is elegant to the point of being flowery as always, but not as over-the-top as he sometimes gets. Nice balance in all things. If you have the chance, listen to the full cast audiobook! Originally intended format, and excellent.

Stardust is a joyful and lovely fantasy novel by Neil Gaiman, that has been turned into an equally joyful and loving movie. I knew the movie first (though many of the details were way over my head back then), and it is superficially similar and fundamentally different from the book – both are good, though.

Now this was just a really enjoyable YA book on the topic of parallel worlds – a bit like a children's version of Long Earth with some magic mixed in. A not-too-heavy, enjoyable book!

Short story collections are tricky things, and tricky to rate. You never love all of them, but when one or two of them truly grab you, you're good. And of course, nobody gets grabbed by the same stories. The three stars represent the amount of stories that didn't do a thing for me, even though I fell for a few of the others.

I love Neil Gaiman, and I like reading myths and legends, and this book was … bland? It is a straight retelling of much of the Snorri Edda, adding some detail from the Poetic Edda in places. Gaiman adds fine details, and a tongue-in-cheek view of the gods, but never overdoing things - it would be easy to make fun of Thor, Loki, the giants … all the time, but he does it in places, and in a very low-key (hah!) way.
